Chiropractic Care:Your Questions Answered.

As a popular alternative therapy, chiropractic care often induces a few questions.  Below are some of the most common questions chiropractors get asked by patients.

Can chiropractic care help with my back problem?

Chiropractic treatment is usually highly effective in preventing and managing back pain. However, only an initial consultation with a chiropractor will confirm if the treatment is right for you. Most reputable chiropractors will refer you to the right professional if they are unable to help.

What is the difference between a chiropractor and an osteopath?

Chiropractors focus on diagnosing and removing spinal subluxations (nerve stress).
Nerve stress can cause pain and stiffness which can lead to body dysfunction and ill health. Chiropractors correct the spine by gently adjusting it and helping to restore its normal flexibility and alignment. Osteopathy typically involves more focus on the circulatory system and muscles and less focus on the nervous system.

What is meant by a “spinal adjustment”?

Adjustments are when a chiropractor makes gentle movements of your spine. To do this, a chiropractor will use his hands to apply a controlled amount of pressure in a precise direction to a joint. Depending on your requirements, this may be a quick movement or a slow pressure. The chiropractor’s end goal is to remove nerve stress and restore your body’s alignment and balance.

What is meant by “subluxation”?

A subluxation is a bone or a disc in your spine that is out of place and causing nerve irritation. This stress on the nerve can lead to pain and muscle spasms.

What is that popping or cracking sound?

During chiropractic treatment, a popping or cracking sound is simply the release of small gas bubbles into the joint. This occurs when the joint has been stretched and separated. Most patients find this experience pleasant and relieving.

Is it safe to crack my own back?

Chiropractors strongly advise against cracking your own back (or any other joints for that matter!). Trying to perform chiropractic techniques on your own accord could make your condition worse and even cause serious damage. If you feel like you urge to crack or pop your joints, get in touch with a reputable chiropractor.

Is chiropractic treatment safe?

Chiropractic treatment is an extremely safe, low-risk intervention. Some clients may feel some mild tenderness or stiffness after an adjustment, but this is usually temporary and a positive sign that the body is responding to healthy changes.

Do I need a referral from my GP to see a chiropractor?

Chiropractic care is the third largest primary health care service in the world (after medicine and dentistry), but it is not covered on the NHS. Because it is a private service, you do not need a GP referral to book an appointment with a chiropractor.
