Suffering from untreated chronic pain? Living an inactive lifestyle as a result? Get a diagnosis and a proper treatment plan in place or you could be at risk of developing disuse syndrome.
Disuse syndrome can lead to the deteriation of many body functions. As suggested by its name, the syndrome is caused by prolonged or frequent physical inactivity and is cultivated by our sedentary lifestyles. It’s a classic case of “use it or lose it”, according to our Stoke on Trent chiropractor.
So what are the effects of this little known condition?
Disuse syndrome can result in many physical consequences that can occur in many different body systems. Common effects can include:
Problems with the musculoskeletal system
Muscle disuse can lead to muscle wasting. A similar effect takes place on a temporary basis in some people who have an arm or a leg in a plaster cast for a period of time. The diameter of the affected limb may be noticeably smaller after being inactive for a few weeks.
Disuse syndrome can cause a reduction in oxygen uptake and a surge in systolic blood pressure. It is also common for patients who have prolonged bed rest to experience a 10-15% decrease in blood plasma volume.
Nervous system changes
Physical inactivity can cause changes in the nervous system including slower mental processing, memory problems, depression and anxiety. Many people with disuse syndrome also experience newfound difficulties with concentration.
The human body simply wasn’t designed to stay still; therefore prolonged inactivity can cause a myriad of significant health problems. As exercise and activity promote physical healing, disuse syndrome can also increase the likelihood of a person developing chronic pain or their existing pain becoming worse.
Unfortunately, many people don’t consider a lack of physical activity and exercise as a causative factor to their health problems. Worryingly, many people with existing chronic pain conditions also become even more inactive. It can seem like a vicious circle that offers no break. But it doesn’t have to be this way.
