Experiencing a back injury can be troublesome, but with the right care and attention from your chiropractor and medical team you can give yourself the best chance of making a full recovery.
Here our chiropractor in Stoke on Trent shares essential advice on what to do following an injury to your spine.
Asses the type of pain you feel and keep a record of it for a few days to see if the pain changes/ progresses. An effective way to do this is to rate your pain from 1 to 10 on the day of the injury and then rate it again after a few days. If you visit your doctor or a chiropractor following your injury, this record of pain will be very helpful in achieving an accurate diagnosis and creating an appropriate treatment plan.
Get Familiar with “Red Flag” Symptoms
Seek immediate medical help if your pain is so severe that you cannot walk or you find it difficult to feel your legs. If you are on your own, call someone to help you or call an ambulance; do not try to drive to the hospital in this condition. Even if you feel able to, your symptoms could worsen on the way which could put you in danger.
You should also seek prompt medical advice if you develop the following symptoms after a back injury:
- Numbness in the pelvis, lower back, and/ or the surrounding area
- Shooting pain that travels down one or both legs
- A feeling of weakness or unsteadiness when you attempt to stand
- Your legs giving way when you are standing or bending.
- Loss of bowel or bladder control
