Getting things “out of your head and down on paper” is an expressive technique that’s been long used for many psychological problems. But can it really work when it comes to physical conditions such as chronic back pain?
A news article published on the Backcare.org.uk website recently highlights a book written by an orthopedic surgeon from Seattle, Dr David Hanscom, “Back in Control: A spine surgeon’s roadmap out of chronic pain“.
Expressive Writing and its Therapeutic Value
One of the strategies that Dr Hanscom shares, which he himself found impactful when recovering from chronic pain himself, is expressive writing.
The idea is based on the belief that the more suppressed negative thoughts are the stronger and more destructive they become. Releasing these thoughts on to paper allows you to acknowledge them and separate them away from you and your body.
According to the article, a study was published last year showing the emotional aspect of back pain.
