Is Bed Rest Good for Back Pain?

We often get asked about the effectiveness of treating back pain with bed rest. Our answer is that in most cases, bed rest has a very limited role. Of course, laying down and resting can provide a welcome break from sitting or standing in pain but being immobile for too long can be hazardous to your health.

If you suffer from chronic or acute back pain, you may find that a period of best rest helps in the short term, but outstaying your welcome “between the sheets” could put you at risk of further health problems. Our reputable chiropractor in Stoke on Trent warns that extended periods of best rest puts patients at risk of muscle reconditioning, digestive problems and even blood clots in the veins of the legs and pelvis. And of course, being isolated and constrained to one place doesn’t exactly do wonders for mental health either!

Your GP, chiropractor or healthcare provider may be able to recommend suitable exercises that can ease the specific type of pain that you’re experiencing. In most cases, these will be more beneficial to your overall health than simply following the (very) outdated advice of bed rest.
