These days it seems like we can’t turn our heads without being warned about the many habits that risk putting our health, and even our lives, in danger. From cutting down on alcohol consumption to making sure we get our “five a day”, the media is swamped with advice on healthier living. But there’s one dangerous issue that’s not so commonly mentioned; and it’s something that many of us do on a daily basis – sitting down for extended periods of time.
Worrying results from a recent study published in the Lancet* suggests that sedentary lifestyles are contributing to 5.3 million premature deaths every year, compared to 5.1 million linked to smoking!
Although many of us deem sitting for long periods a necessity to carry out our office-based jobs, regularly doing so is linked to serious health conditions such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease. But there is a way to offset these risks – and all it takes is one hour of brisk exercise every day. The findings of the study, which was published to coincide with the Olympics, revealed that people who sat for eight hours a day, but still engaged in regular physical exercise, had a far lower risk of early death compared with people who sat for fewer hours a day, but were not physically active.
Our Stoke on Trent chiropractor recommends that all office workers – and in particular those who don’t engage in regular exercise – make an extra effort to incorporate physical activities into their daily schedules. Making simple changes such as taking a walk during lunch hours, jogging before or after work or cycling to work instead of driving/ commuting can be a significant help in reducing the risk of health issues linked to a sedentary lifestyle. Even walking up the stairs instead of taking the lift or getting off the bus a stop further away from home can make a positive difference.
Our chiropractor advises that it’s important not to take the “all or nothing” approach. If an hour’s exercise a day is unrealistic, start by reducing the amount of time you engage in sedentary behaviour and increase the amount of physical activity you do.
With such shocking figures showing just how big a difference moving more can make, even the smallest changes are important.
After all, it’s not just your back that’s affected by being inactive. You could be sitting on a far more sinister problem…
