Stepping Into Spring With Exercise

healthy living advice from our stoke on trent chiropractorMarch heralds the start of Spring with longer days and hopefully warmer weather! It’s a great time of year to get out of doors and take some exercise and there’s one form of exercise that our chiropractor at City Chiropractic in Stoke on Trent can’t recommend enough.

It’s simple, free and accessible to most people of all ages and abilities. It is one of the most underrated forms of exercises which comes with great benefits for our health and well-being.

Have you guessed what it is yet? It’s walking.

Our chiropractor can’t stress enough what a difference taking regular walks could have on your overall health. With this in mind, here are some tips and advice to get you started.

Make sure you wear comfortable shoes and appropriate clothing – there’s nothing worse than blisters or being soaked through by an unexpected shower!

If you have taken little or no exercise recently then start slowly. You don’t want to overdo it on your first outing. You can build up your pace and the distance you cover gradually over time. The important thing is to get started.

Towards the end of your walk start to slow down your pace and do a few simple stretches to cool down.

Increase the amount of walking you do on a daily basis. Examples would be to park further from the shops and take the stairs instead of the life or escalator.

Join a walking group. Not only is it a great way to stay motivated, it is also a great way to meet new people. Searching online is a great way to find walking groups in your area.

We are very fortunate in Stoke on Trent as it is regarded as one of the greenest cities in the UK. We have an abundance of parks, wildlife areas and waterways on our doorsteps to take advantage of. Stoke is also surrounded by fantastic walking country, including the Staffordshire Moorlands and Peak District National Park. The Visit Stoke website has comprehensive information about walking in and around Stoke on Trent and you can access the site here.

No more excuses – get outdoors and start walking.

If you have a pre-existing health condition you may wish to seek your GPs advice before you exercise.
