If you’ve ever experienced a muscle spasm in your back, you will know how painful and debilitating they can be. Many of the patients who visit our Stoke on Trent chiropractors are eager to know just what to do when an unexpected spasm occurs. Here’s our advice:
1: Stop What You’re Doing!
Back spasms require immediate attention and are often a warning sign that you must not continue with what you’re doing. When you feel a spasm attack coming on, carefully move to a comfortable surface. If you can lie down, you will help to reduce the intensity of the pain by relaxing the muscles that are in spasm.
2: Relax Your Breathing.
You can help to relax the muscles in spasm by breathing in a slow and controlled way. Remember that your muscles are in spasm as a protection mechanism to prevent you from moving. By doing this, the spasm is guarding a weaker area of your body from getting injured. Keep this in mind when you’re experiencing a spasm and try not to become stressed or agitated (as this will create further tension in the muscles).
3: Gently Stretch the Muscle.
If you are able to do so, try to extend the muscles that are in spasm very slightly and gradually. Increasing the length of the muscle will help to decrease the amount of pain you feel.
