Thinking of Booking a Summer Holiday? How to Avoid Back Pain on a Plane

Back pain advice when travlling from City ChiropracticIt’s that time of year when many people are thinking of booking those well-deserved summer holidays. If you suffer from chronic back pain, however, the thought of the journey alone can put a dampener on your holiday plans. Maybe you’re even considering putting your dreams of a week or two in the sun on the back-burner. But there are ways that you can help your back pain when travelling abroad.

Here we share the following three tips so that you don’t have to miss out on sun, sea and sand this summer:

1: Ask for Your Doctor’s Assistance

Not many people realise this but your doctor can be one of your biggest forms of support when preparing for a holiday. Get in touch with your doctor and ask for a letter to the airline and flight crew to accommodate your needs. There have been cases where chronic back pain sufferers have been upgraded, provided blankets and cushions and allowed to lie down and rest during long haul flights. It’s certainly worth trying!

Also, ask your GP for “on hand” pain relief to help make the plane journey easier on your back.

2: Speak to the Airline

In the weeks leading up to your holiday, phone the airline to tell them about your medical condition. If you provide them with enough notice, they may be able to help make your journey more comfortable. This may include giving you access to shuttles or platforms before boarding the plane, arranging for airline personnel to help you carry and lift your luggage and providing you with medical attention if required. Remember that the more the airline knows of your condition, the better equipped they can be to help you.

3: Be Savvy about Your Flight Schedule

If you suffer from a painful back condition then choosing a good flight time can make all the difference to your journey. Think about taking a flight where there are likely to be fewer people on board (the airline may be able to provide you with more information on this) and consider booking an afternoon flight so that you can get a good night’s sleep before you travel.

Above all, it’s important to remember that back pain doesn’t have to put your plans for sun, sea and sand in jeopardy – it just means you have to plan a little further and take the necessary precautions.
