If you or a loved one is experiencing back, neck or other joint/ muscle pain, you have probably stumbled across a few bits of jargon that you may not fully understand. At our Stoke on Trent chiropractic clinic, we ensure that we explain everything in “layman” terms (we don’t expect you to be a chiropractor just to be able to understand the nature of your pain and treatment!).
Here are our explanations to a few terms you may have heard before:
This is simply a term to describe pain that lasts a short time – usually a few days to several weeks. Episodes of pain lasting longer than three months are not usually considered acute.
This refers to a pain episode that lasts more than three months
This is medical term used to describe the cartilage that serves as a cushion between two vertebrae. Each disk has a gel-like centre that sometimes protrudes to form a herniated disk.
This word refers to structures involving tendons, muscles, ligaments, and joints.
This is a chiropractic term that refers to a controlled technique that stretches a joint to increase its mobility. It’s this form of manipulation that causes the painless, audible “pop” that is typically associated with chiropractic treatment.
Never be afraid to ask your chiropractor or health practitioner to explain anything that you’re unsure of. It’s your body – you have every right to know!
