Imagine the situation… You’ve been working at your desk all day and your back and neck feel as stiff as an ironing board. While a visit to the chiropractor seems like a dream come true right now, you have another few hours left at work and your boss doesn’t take too lightly to “impromptu” absences. You need instant relief if there’s any chance of you doing anything productive between now and five o clock. So what do you do?
Well, the good news is that there are many benefits to learning self-massage techniques. Our chiropractor shares three top tips here:
- Tilt your head back, and using your palms and fingers of each hand, squeeze your flesh at the base of your neck on each side of your spine. After you’ve done this, slowly tilt your head forwards while still squeezing your skin with your palms and fingers. Hold the stretch for 10 second and then move your head to an upright position.
- Rub your hands up and down the back of your neck to warm up. Next, use your fingers on both hands to make deep, circular pressures all around your neck area. Remember to apply pressure to the muscles, not to the spine directly.
- Put your left hand on your right shoulder and gently squeeze the muscle. As you hold the squeeze, start to slowly rotate your shoulder in a backwards position. If you can gear a “grinding” noise, this suggests that your muscles are tight and tense. Repeat this exercise with your right hand on your left shoulder.
Bear in mind that the purpose of this advice is to help you to relieve your symptoms. It should not be used as an alternative to the advice given by your healthcare professional and if you experience pain or any worsening of your condition then stop these exercises immediately.
