Arthritis affects about 20% of the UK population in one form or another. And although many people associate arthritis with age, it actually affects all age groups and both sexes too. Some arthritis tends to be associated with the natural aging process and can become more pronounced as the years add up. There are also some types of arthritis that occurs secondary to joint damage and also genetic types of arthritis.

The condition tends to be characterised by inflammation and degeneration of a joint, which results in joint pain and swelling. Quite often, this progresses to the point where it has a negative impact on everyday life.

The hip joint, knee joint and the joints of the hand are most commonly affected by arthritis, but the condition can affect any joint in the body, including the back and neck.  As there are so many different types of arthritis, symptoms can present in slightly different ways.
