If you find yourself suffering from lower back pain after giving birth, you’re not the only one! Almost half of all women will suffer from lower back pain in the first few months after having a baby. Here our Stoke on Trent chiropractor explains why:
During pregnancy, the body releases relaxin, a hormone that relaxes the joints and ligaments in your pelvis to make the birthing process easier. Unfortunately, this can also increase the risk of inflammation and joint misalignment, which can result in lower back pain.
These relaxin levels remain elevated for three to four months after birth. Once they return to normal, most pregnancy-related lower back issues should subside.
If you find yourself experiencing back pain for longer, a trip to the chiropractor could be a good idea!
Your lifestyle as a new mum can also affect the health of your spine. Caring for your little bundle of joy can put strain on you and your body. If you’re like many mums, you probably don’t get the chance to stop and think about some of the positions you are putting yourself in during the activities you carry out throughout the day. These repetitive stresses can result in injuries.
Think about it – in effect, you are lifting and carrying an ever increasing weight several times a day. Imagine you were to do this in a gym environment, you would lift the weights using proper techniques and gradually increase the weight as your muscles develop and become stronger. But you don’t get a chance to do this when you have a newborn baby! Suddenly, your days are spent lifting, carrying and lugging prams, car seats and what seems like half your life belongings every time you leave the house!
Having a baby can take a toll on your body. Don’t put up with back pain. If you’re struggling, contact us for help. We are always here with all kinds of advice when it comes to back pain!
