#1 – Once you have chiropractic care, you must continue having it

Many people mistakenly believe that seeing a chiropractor once means you will have to constantly return to them.  They think that having a single spinal adjustment means your musculoskeletal system is somehow forever changed and you will be forced to return for more treatment.

This is completely false.  You can have a single visit with a chiropractor and receive an effective treatment that relieves your back pain or improves your general health.  The real reason why people return to our chiropractic clinic in Stoke on Trent is that each treatment makes them feel better!  They enjoy the feeling of having their musculoskeletal system corrected and the additional health benefits that chiropractic care brings.

#2 – Receiving a spinal adjustment can be painful

Another common chiropractic myth is that a chiropractic spinal adjustment involves a lot of painful cracking of the back.  The truth is, major adjustments are rarely required and they are not painful.  In fact, most clients experience pain relief and an improvement in their mobility during or shortly after an adjustment.  A skilled chiropractor always works carefully with the client, ensuring that they remain comfortable throughout the entire procedure.

#3 – You only go to a chiropractor if you have back pain

Chiropractic care can be used to treat a wide variety of conditions, in addition to back pain,  that originate in the muscular, skeletal and nervous system. This can include headaches, neck pain, shoulder, elbow and wrist pain, hip, knee and ankle pain and generalised aches and pain.  A chiropractor can also provide useful advice on topics like fitness, nutrition, and ergonomics. We are the leading chiropractor in Stoke on Trent for diagnosing and resolving musculoskeletal issues, so if you are suffering pain and discomfort contact us to find out how we can help you.

#4 – Children can’t have chiropractic treatments

It is perfectly safe for children to have chiropractic treatments performed.  Chiropractic can help kids deal with many of the same spine and joint conditions that adults suffer. Often a child’s pain can be put down to ‘growing pains’. However, this may not be the case and our chiropractors recommend that advice is sought from a qualified chiropractor to determine the cause and appropriate treatment for the pain.

#5 – You must obtain a referral to see a chiropractor

While many people may have been referred to a chiropractor by a medical professional, it is not necessary to have a medical referral.  If you know that your problem relates to the musculoskeletal system, you can go directly to the chiropractor.  The only exception to this rule is for people on private health insurance.  You may need to see a GP first in order to claim the expense of seeing a chiropractor on your insurance policy.

#6 – Chiropractors are not actual doctors

Although they usually don’t have a medical degree, chiropractors are highly trained  professionals regulated by the General Chiropractic Council (GCC).  All chiropractors must have a chiropractic degree to provide care to patients, with a focus on providing high levels of patient care and safety.

#7 – Chiropractic care is not effective

There have been many of studies performed which clearly show that chiropractic care works.  It is one of the best ways to deal with conditions affecting the musculoskeletal and nervous system, ranging from back pain through to sports injuries.
