As a busy chiropractor in Stoke on Trent, I see clients with a wide range of medical concerns, from back pain through to muscle strains. A surprisingly large proportion of our clients also mention that they regularly experience headaches and use medications to reduce their pain levels.
If you are a headache sufferer, you will be happy to learn that there are many natural headache treatments available as well. These treatments are safer than the long-term use of painkillers and can save you a lot of money. In this article, I’ll share several of these treatments.

#1 – Chiropractic treatment
Many of the clients who attend our Chiropractic Clinic in Stoke on Trent have struggled with headaches for years. They are often surprised to discover that chiropractic care can help to reduce the severity and frequency of their headaches.
Careful manipulation of the joints of the neck allows for the rhythmic movements of cervical segments, which can relieve tension headaches and migraine headaches. This is all backed up by science, with a study performed by Macquarie University finding that 72 percent of migraine sufferers experienced a “substantial” or “noticeable” reduction in their headache symptoms after receiving chiropractic care.
Chiropractic care is also effective at relieving headaches by reducing the muscle tension in the neck, which is very common amongst people who spend a lot of time using electronic devices. To learn more, visit our chiropractic clinic in Stoke on Trent.
#2 – Drink more water
Researchers have discovered that chronic dehydration is a common cause of both migraines headaches and tension headaches. Avoid dehydration headaches by drinking at least 2 litres of water per day and eating water-rich foods.
#3 – Use essential oils
Essential oils provide many therapeutic benefits. Lavender oil and Peppermint oil have both been shown to reduce the symptoms of tension headaches. Peppermint oil should be rubbed on the temples for pain relief and lavender oil should be applied to the upper lip and inhaled.
#4 – Use a cold compress
Applying a cold or frozen compress on the head or neck is an easy way to reduce the symptoms of a headache. Cold compresses work by reducing inflammation, constricting blood vessels, and slowing nerve conduction. To make a cold compress, put some ice cubes in a plastic bag and wrap it in a towel. Apply it to the back of your neck or temples.
#5 – Take Magnesium
Magnesium is an important mineral that is essential for maintaining good health. It is necessary for many important biological functions, including nerve transmission and the moderation of glucose levels.
Researchers have discovered that people who are Magnesium deficient suffer from more headaches than those that are not. If you suspect your headaches are magnesium-related, take a supplement with at least 600 mg of magnesium in it.
#6 – Get more sleep
Sleep deprivation can cause tension headaches and has been shown to make headache pain more severe. Adults should aim for at least 7.5 hours of quality sleep each night.
#7 – Cut back on alcohol
Researchers have discovered that some people have their migraine headaches triggered by alcohol consumption. There is also some evidence to suggest that alcohol can cause tension headaches. The link between alcohol and headaches occurs because alcohol is a vasodilator which can lead to headaches. Try abstaining from alcohol for two weeks to see if your headaches are reduced in severity or disappear completely.
#8 – Take a B-Complex Vitamin
B vitamins are water-soluble micronutrients that are essential for good health. Multiple studies have found that vitamins B12, B2, and B6 can all reduce the risk of headaches occurring. Take 1 to 2 vitamin B complex tablets each day to see if it reduces the frequency or severity of your headaches.
#9 – Drink some caffeine
Caffeinated beverages like tea and coffee will constrict blood flow, which can reduce headache symptoms. Caffeine can also boost the effect of over the counter headache relief medications like ibuprofen and aspirin.
#10 – De-stress
Many people experience headaches because they are extremely stressed. Attack the root cause of your headaches by performing stress-relieving activities like yoga, meditation, and exercise. At the very least, you will enjoy a feeling of calmness and relaxation after performing one of these activities.
