It’s Time To Sit Less & Move More

Have you considered how long you spend sitting every day? If you are like most British people you will be spending on average 8.9 hours a day sitting. That’s a lot of time!

Increasing bodies of research show that sitting for prolonged periods of time can lead to increased risks of a number of health issues. Back pain being one of them and as chiropractors in our busy clinic in Stoke on Trent we see the results first hand.

It’s surprising how the hours of sitting mount up and our lifestyles contribute to this. Many of us spend time seated while commuting and in the office at our desks. It’s not surprising that for many the first thought when getting home is to crash out on the sofa in front of the TV in the evening!

Every year Get Britain Standing runs a challenge to encourage people and employers to sit less and move more. This year the ‘Wiggle It, Waggle It Just Don’t Sit On It‘ challenge is on the 27th April.

If you spend many hours a day at your desk here are a few ideas to get yourself moving more:

  • Take a break from your desk every 30 minutes and move around.
  • Make phone calls standing up
  • Hold standing meetings or even walking ones
  • Don’t phone or email your work colleagues that work nearby – walk to their desk and speak with them.
  • Take a walk at lunch time

We’re sure you can come up with plenty more ideas. So why not start to sit less and move more!
