Most of us will have experienced the sensation of ‘pins and needles’ at some point or another – it’s a pretty common occurrence that happens when excess pressure is applied to a part of the body, such as when you sit on your knees rest your head on your arm.
For the majority of people, the strange sensation of pricking, tingling or numbing lasts for just a short amount of time and can easily be relieved by releasing the pressure on the affected body part. For others, however, pins and needles are a chronic symptom with no positional cause.
Medically known as ‘paraesthesia’, prolonged pins and needles can be caused by a number of health conditions including sciatica and carpal tunnel syndrome. Among the many other causative factors of pins and needles are diabetes, cervical spondylosis and certain vitamin deficiencies.
Our chiropractor in Stoke on Trent recommends that you visit your GP if you suffer from prolonged or chronic pins and needles sensations.
