Football season is well and truly upon us and for hardcore footy fans this means racking up some impressive hours on the sofa as they industriously follow the competition. And of course, it also means a lot of jumping up to celebrate a goal (or even to berate the referee, in some instances!).
But while the prospect of being glued to the TV for the next several months may seem like domestic paradise for football fanatics, the associated health hazards are far less desirable, warns our renowned Stoke on Trent Chiropractor.
A recent survey carried out by the British Chiropractic Association revealed that 35% of people said that sitting for long periods triggered back pain* What’s even more worrying is that most people watch sports slumped at the edge of their seats; tense and anxious in the hope for a win for their favourite team. Bad posture can cause pain, stiffness and other uncomfortable symptoms which often go unrecognised until later on in life. Our experienced team of chiropractors in Stoke on Trent warns that young, fit and healthy sports fans may not even be aware of the strain they are putting on their spines and necks while sitting down watching sports or leaping to the air in excitement or frustration.
Here are three top tips, straight from the desk of our experienced Stoke on Trent Chiropractor, to ensure you don’t accumulate any injury time this football season:
Goal 1: Move!
Your position is just as important as that of the players on the pitch; every twenty minutes, stand up and move around. Make sure you are active at half time – there’s plenty of time to get those muscles moving during the 15 minute TV break. (You may even feel inspired to have a kick-about yourself!)
Goal 2: Straighten Up!
Poor posture is the cause of many back and neck complaints, so be careful not to slump as you’re watching the game. Rest your back against the back of your sofa/ chair – this will allow you to sit in a much safer position.
Goal 3: On the Head with Your Drinks!
Drink water instead of alcohol and avoid caffeine rich drinks such as tea and coffee. Not only will plenty of water keep you hydrated, but it will help you to better concentrate on the game!
