From muscle spasms to spine fractures, there are many ways that our backs can become the victim of an accident or injury. But more often than not, painful back injuries are picked up from the most seemingly harmless situations. Our chiropractor in Stoke on Trent has highlighted two common causes of back injury and how you can avoid doing the same:
1: Everyday Tasks
Simple household chores such as taking out the rubbish or emptying the dishwasher don’t exactly scream “danger!” but they can be dangerous to your spine if you’re not focussed on what you’re doing.
Instead of whizzing through your housework on “autopilot”, focus on how you hold your upper body. Pull your naval towards your spine and imagine you’re wearing a support that pulls the sides of your abs inwards. Doing this as you’re lifting and bending will help to strengthen and support your back and reduce the risk of picking up a painful injury.
2: Poor Lifting Technique
Bending or lifting incorrectly is one of the most common causes of back injuries.
It’s important to bend your knees and keep your back straight while lifting and be careful not to turn or twist. Another effective lifting technique is to keep the object close to you to reduce the load of pressure on your back.
Remember; if something is too heavy for you to lift comfortably, leave it until you have help. As a guide, do not attempt to lift anything that weighs more than 20% of your body weight.
