Members of the British Chiropractic Association (BCA) have shared some of the strangest ‘cures’ back pain sufferers have told them about trying. These include applying WD40, hanging from door frames and drinking urine!
Whilst these are more extreme ‘cures’, one of the most common misconceptions about back pain is that rest is the best cure. Consumer research undertaken by the BCA revealed that 50% of people believed that taking rest is right for a bad back. In the 16 – 24 age group this number rose to 64%.
Unfortunately rest in most instances of back pain is not the best cure. It often comes as a surprise to our patients in City Chiropractic Clinic in Stoke on Trent that staying mobile and taking moderate levels of exercise are more appropriate in the long run.
Back pain is on the rise and with the estimate that 80% of us will experience back pain at some time in our lives it is increasingly important that we learn to take good care of our spines. Moderate exercise is essential to build and maintain strength and flexibility in the spine, improving posture and protecting us from any further pain.
