Being a mother can be tough work, both physically and mentally. It can also take its toll on the back. That’s why out Stoke chiropractors want all mums to show some love to their backs, especially, if they are already suffering back pain.
Common causes of back pain
Back pain is unfortunately very common with 4 out 5 of people expected to suffer back pain at some point in their lives. There are many causes of back pain. For many, their back pain will start suddenly and improve quickly without the need of treatment.
In some instances, back pain may be triggered by an injury or accident. Some of the common causes of visits to our chiropractors in Stoke are as a result of lifting or bending awkwardly.
Another common cause of back pain is poor posture. Our busy lifestyles and working habits can have a detrimental affect on our posture. Hunching at a desk all day, spending hours looking down at mobile devices, slouching on the sofa and sitting behind the wheel of a car are just a few of the actions that can impact our posture.
Wear and tear, especially as we age, can also contribute to back pain.
General back care advice for mums
Mums with toddlers and younger children do a lot of lifting and bending. Whether it’s lifting your young one in and out of their cot, car seat or stroller to bending over for playtime, cleaning up or feed time, it’s important to take of your back.
- Lifting and bending: Always lift with a straight spine and bend your knees. Avoid twisting your body when lifting and bending.
- Carrying heavy bags: Use a rucksack style bag to carry items. This style of bag allows you to spread the weight, across and close to your back, when the straps are adjusted to do so.
- Footwear: Avoid high heels and wear comfortable and supportive shoes.
- Sitting: Do not sit for prolonged periods and check your posture when seated. Let the seat take your weight and keep as much of your body in contact with the seat with your knees lower than your hips.
- Exercise: Increasing your core strength can help reduce the risk of injury. Ask a suitably qualified health care professional, such as a chiropractor or GP, for advice on exercises that will help develop your core strength.
Chiropractic and back pain
If you are suffering back pain it can be extremely painful. It can be a natural instinct, and also a long-held belief by many, that the best approach to ease and resolve their back pain is to rest and lie down.
However, research has shown that resting is not the solution to back pain that many believe. It may well be that resting for more than a day or two could have the opposite effect and make your back pain worse. The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) recommends that a combination of spinal manipulation and exercises as the best approach to back pain.
Unlike painkillers, chiropractic treats the cause of your pain rather than treating the symptoms of the pain itself.
Professional chiropractors specialise in assessing, diagnosing and managing spine and joint conditions. Chiropractors are highly trained in identifying the cause of pain in the spine. In the UK they undergo a minimum of four years’ full-time training. Importantly, chiropractors are regulated by law and must work within strict professional and ethical boundaries.
